* Nantou First County to Achieve “One Township, One Book Depository” Celebration on October 26th.
Date : 96/11/28
Nantou became the first county this year to achieve the national target of "One Township, One Book Depository". A celebratory event was held on October 26th at Ming Chian Elementary School, with County Magistrate Lee Chao-ching opening the proceedings by unveiling a commemorative plaque. County Magistrate Lee said that the Nantou government is vigorously promoting literacy among local residents and trying to narrow the gap between the cities and the countryside. In 2005, Nantou became the first county to establish a Taiwan Reading Center and a Love Book Depository to encourage the habit of reading, and within just two years, it has reached the "One Township, One Book Depository" target. The Taiwan Reading Center can be accessed via computers from the 16 other counties, and, so far, more than 200,000 books have been accessed in this way by over 350,000 readers. This not only encourages reading in general, and willingness to study among students in particular, but it also enhances Nantou's reputation as a center of learning and healthy living.

Department of Elementary Education director Pan Wen-chung said that achieving this target within two years is a remarkable tribute to the hard work and cooperative effort between the Nantou government teams and the local populace. He said that this will now set the standard for other counties in the effort to promote reading island-wide and improve the competitiveness of future generations.

The Nantou County Government established the Taiwan Reading Center two years ago at Hsu Kuang Senior High School, and with some outside help and support established Love Book Depositories in libraries, junior high schools and elementary schools in 13 different townships, becoming the first county in Taiwan to achieve the "One Township, One Book Depository" target. There have been 67 other Love Book Depositories set up all over Taiwan, but only Nantou County deserves the moniker of "Home of fine mountains, fine water and fine books".
